Give Your Broken Patio Umbrella NEW LIFE!

If you have a broken rib on your patio umbrella, don’t throw it away! You can fix it with ease and in just a few minutes!

Key Takeaways

  • Quick and easy repair for broken patio umbrellas.
  • Materials needed include copper tubing, rivet gun, and drill.
  • Step-by-step guide to restore your umbrella’s functionality.

Introduction

In South Florida, storms can come out of nowhere, and if you’re not careful, your patio umbrella can suffer the consequences. Recently, a storm damaged my umbrella, breaking one of its ribs. Instead of tossing it out, I decided to repair it myself. This guide will walk you through the simple steps to give your broken patio umbrella a new lease on life.

Materials Needed

Before starting the repair, gather the following materials:

  • Copper Tubing: 3/4 inch, approximately 6 inches long.
  • Rivet Gun: Essential for securing the repair.
  • Rivets: Make sure they fit your rivet gun.
  • Drill: For making holes in the tubing and umbrella.
  • 1/8" Drill Bit: To match the size of the rivets.
  • Random Screw: A spare screw from around the house.

Step 1: Flatten the Tubing

The first step in the repair process is to flatten the copper tubing. This will allow it to fit snugly over the broken rib of the umbrella. You can use a vise to squeeze the tubing flat, or if you don’t have one, a hammer will do the trick. Aim to flatten about three inches on each side of the tubing.

Step 2: Drill Holes

Once the tubing is flattened, it’s time to drill holes. Here’s how:

  1. Mark the Center: Measure three inches from one end of the tubing and mark the center.
  2. Drill Holes: Using the 1/8" drill bit, drill a hole at the center mark and another hole about 5.25 inches from the end.
  3. Find a Screw: Locate a screw that fits into the drilled hole. This will help you align the tubing with the broken rib.

Step 3: Attach the Rivet

With the holes drilled, it’s time to attach the tubing to the broken rib:

  1. Insert the Rivet: Place a rivet into the rivet gun and insert it into the hole you just drilled.
  2. Secure the Rivet: Squeeze the rivet gun to secure the rivet in place. This will hold the tubing to the broken rib.

Step 4: Final Attachment

Now that the tubing is attached to the broken rib, it’s time to reattach it to the umbrella:

  1. Align the Pieces: Position the tubing so that it aligns with the original spot where the rib was attached.
  2. Insert the Screw: Use the screw you found earlier to secure the tubing to the umbrella arm. Make sure it fits snugly.
  3. Consider Additional Support: If necessary, add a piece of foam or a small bolt to prevent the screw from damaging the umbrella fabric.

Conclusion

With just a few simple steps, you can restore your patio umbrella and enjoy the beautiful weather once again. This DIY repair not only saves you money but also extends the life of your outdoor furniture. If you have any questions or comments, feel free to leave them below.
