Breathe Easy: A Simple Guide to Changing Your Cabin Air Filter

Have you noticed a musty smell or reduced airflow in your car’s cabin? It might be time to change your cabin air filter. In this easy-to-follow guide, we’ll walk you through the steps to ensure you’re breathing clean, fresh air on your drives.

Don’t pay the mechanic $30 or more to replace an air filter that you can do on your own in less than 5 minutes – and no special tools are required!

Step 1: Locate Your Cabin Air Filter: Cabin air filters are typically located behind the glove compartment, under the dashboard, or in the engine compartment. Consult your vehicle’s manual to find the exact location.

Step 2: Gather the Necessary Tools: You’ll need a screwdriver (Phillips or flathead, depending on your vehicle), a new cabin air filter (make sure it matches your vehicle’s make and model), and, optionally, a vacuum cleaner.

Step 3: Open the Glove Compartment: Empty the glove compartment and locate the retaining clips or screws on the sides. Carefully remove them to allow the glove compartment to swing down, providing access to the cabin air filter.

Step 4: Identify the Filter Housing: Look for a rectangular or square-shaped plastic housing behind the glove compartment. This housing encases the cabin air filter.

Step 5: Remove the Old Filter: Slide out the old cabin air filter. Take note of the airflow direction indicated on the filter; this ensures you install the new filter correctly.

Step 6: Clean the Filter Housing: If the filter housing is dirty, use a vacuum cleaner to remove dust and debris. Keeping this area clean helps maintain optimal airflow.

Step 7: Install the New Filter: Slide the new cabin air filter into the housing, making sure it aligns with the airflow direction marked on the filter.

Step 8: Close Up the Compartment: Carefully lift the glove compartment back into place and secure it with the retaining clips or screws.

Step 9: Perform a Test: Start your vehicle and turn on the air conditioning or ventilation system. Ensure that air flows smoothly, and there are no unusual smells.

Step 10: Note the Replacement Date: Mark the replacement date on your calendar or in your vehicle’s maintenance log. Cabin air filters typically need replacement every 12,000 to 15,000 miles or as recommended by your vehicle’s manufacturer.

This link on Amazon will allow you to input and store your vehicle’s year, make, and model and then you can find the exact air filter to match!

Congratulations! You’ve successfully changed your cabin air filter, ensuring that the air you breathe inside your car remains fresh and clean. Regular maintenance like this contributes to a comfortable driving experience and promotes a healthier cabin environment. Breathe easy and enjoy the journey!
